As the story explains, the OLLI program at ASU began with the work of Vince Waldron, a professor in New College’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. His efforts to establish community-based lifelong learning opportunities led to a grant and then a permanent $1 million endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation to support OLLI at ASU.

“The definition of retirement changed with the aging baby boomers; an emphasis on leisure was being replaced by a desire for growth and continued learning,” Waldron told ASU Magazine. “Both residents and community developers became interested in partnering with the university to create short college-level learning experiences.”

She’s admittedly a bit nervous but also excited about the new adventures she’s about to experience.

“I felt like everything was designed specifically to make sure students are prepared for the world outside school, and that the professors and staff were more than happy to help make that happen,” Herguth said about her perceptions of her ASU visit that convinced her to move to metropolitan Phoenix.

Herguth also has been admitted to Barrett, The Honors College. She was favorably impressed by Barrett’s offerings as well as those of New College. “It seemed to offer so much more than the honors programs of most of the other schools to which I had applied,” she added.

How did Herguth become interested in forensic science as a career path? In part it was through a video game she discovered as a youngster. Click here to read more.

She’s looking forward to being able to devote more time to teaching and research.

Members of the faculty, staff and Dean’s Advisory Board discussed potential ways to honor Dean Langland’s legacy, and concluded that a scholarship endowment assisting New College students would be a fitting tribute.

Among the enthusiastic supporters of the Dean Elizabeth Langland Scholarship Award is Ed Vasko, a New College alumnus, Valley business owner and Dean’s Advisory Board member.

“Dean Langland inspires people to reach for new ways of thinking and presents a strong yet flexible style that achieves goals through compromise without sacrificing integrity,” Vasko said. “Her service and commitment to excellence has been unmatched in my years of supporting ASU. Because of these special qualities, my wife and I felt it important to support the establishment of this scholarship so that other excellent students at the West campus can have the opportunity to become future leaders like Dr. Langland.”

Fletcher Library on the West campus is also a great place to check out art exhibitions, which typically are displayed on the second and third floors.

Through June 1 you can experience “Transformation,” an exhibit of works by South Mountain High School students. The South Mountain exhibition has become an annual tradition at Fletcher Library. This year art students interpreted the idea of transformation through the lens of their various disciplines including ceramics, digital arts, drawing, painting, fiber arts, jewelry and photography.

Click here for more information about the “Transformation” exhibit.

Then from June 3 through 30 you can take an international trip without leaving campus, as the library hosts “Have Passport – Will Travel,” an international travel photography exhibition. Photographs to be displayed were taken by Valley resident Paula Cullison, who has visited more than 30 countries.
